LOST BULLET (BALLE PERDUE) (full review at Screen Realm)

Lost Bullet (Balle Perdue) is a French action thriller directed by Guillaume Pierre and premiering on Netflix. Sitting in a similar ballpark to Netflix’s underrated, vehicular crime thriller Wheelman (2017), Lost Bullet gives us more anti-heroes, double crosses and tumbling automobiles than you can shake a stick at.

Lino (Alban Lenoir) is a genius mechanic, given a jail term for his part in a bungled jewellery store heist. He is taken under the wing of Detective Charas (Ramzy Bedia) and given leave from prison, provided he works for Charas’ police unit, who tackle crime at high velocity on the streets and highways of France. Lino’s role is to patch up and soup up the pursuit vehicles for their life on the road.

Unfortunately, things go pear shaped when one of the cops in the unit commits murder and hangs it on Lino, forcing him to go on the run and to try and locate a crucial piece of evidence that could clear his name.

CRAZY CULT / FORGOTTEN MOVIES TO WATCH ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO & TUBI AUSTRALIA (full review at Screen Realm)

With global isolation in full swing, everyone’s attention has inevitably turned to how to pass the time at home and what to watch. Naturally, with so much choice at our disposal it can be overwhelming. So I set out to select ten lesser-seen gems from Prime and TUBI, who have been quietly collecting an impressive cache of action, horror and sci-fi movies. These are not necessarily five star classics, but a mix of weirdo curveballs and genuinely great films that don’t deserve to get lost among the deluge of options. Movies that don’t just think outside the box, but tear the box into a million pieces and set fire to box and then rub your face in the box.

You’ll need a subscription to watch Prime, but TUBI is completely free, so long as you’re prepared to endure a couple of advert breaks. Otherwise, their catalogues are pretty similar and remind me of an online video store. At risk of showing my age, it’s fair to say that nothing will ever replicate that formative video shop experience of being scarred for life by the cover of C.H.U.D., or just plain terrified of the Re-Animator poster hanging above the counter. But the online version does have the advantage of letting you watch films with impunity – no power hungry video store clerk is going to stop me renting Die Hard 2, for example.

Unfortunately, a list of ten proved to be much too hard to narrow down, so it evolved into twelve movies (seventeen if you count the trilogies individually) currently streaming on Prime and TUBI in Australia, that deserve to be on a few more watch lists.  So let’s get stuck in.
